Choosing someone to care for a parent, spouse, or family member is one of the most personal decisions you'll make. Whether you're comparing agencies in Lowell, Chelmsford, Dracut, or elsewhere in the Merrimack Valley, asking the right questions upfront can save you stress later.
1. How do you find and select your caregivers?
Ask how the agency recruits, interviews, and checks references and credentials. A good agency can explain its process clearly and won't be vague about it.
2. Will the same caregiver come each time?
Consistency matters — especially for people with memory loss. Ask how the agency tries to keep the same caregiver with your loved one, and what happens when that caregiver is unavailable.
3. How do you match caregivers with clients?
Skills matter, but so do personality, interests, and communication style. The best matches feel less like a service and more like a relationship.
4. What happens if the caregiver doesn't show up or isn't a good fit?
Life happens. Ask about backup plans, and how quickly the agency will respond if you're not comfortable with a caregiver.
5. What services are and aren't included?
Understand the difference between companion care, personal care, and medical care. Ask what the agency can and cannot do — and how they'll work with your loved one's doctors and nurses.
6. How is the care plan created and updated?
Look for an agency that begins with a real conversation about your loved one's needs, routines, and preferences — and that revisits the plan as things change.
7. How will I stay informed?
If you don't live nearby, ask how the agency will keep you updated, and how you can reach someone quickly with a question or concern.
8. What are the costs, minimum hours, and billing terms?
Ask for a clear explanation of rates, any minimum number of hours, and how billing and cancellations work. You should never be surprised by a bill.
9. Can we start small?
Many families begin with a few hours a week to see how it goes. Ask whether the agency is flexible about starting small and increasing care over time.
10. How do you treat your caregivers?
This one is often overlooked. Agencies that respect and support their caregivers tend to keep them longer — which means more consistent care for your family.
